Going to Venezuela in March, for pleasure and research into possible relocation. Interested in communicating with others in similar situation, or who are resident in Venezuela. Particularly interested in Merida, but all cities/regions as well.

I've been living in Costa Rica for the last 5 years, but it's getting expensive. I hear you can live nice on the cheap in Merida. I'd love to know who to contact who knows the area.Planing a visit, hopefully before the end of December.
Comment #7 Charlie from Costa Rica - 08/11/07 16:40
I mentioned in my last post I wanted to live on the cheap. I don't mean 'backpacker' cheap. I have my Tica wife and my Dad living with me, so I need a nice 3 bedroom 2 bath house with some room to grow some vegetables. Living a couple of kilometers out of the city would be wonderful. I can pay up to $300 per month if it is possible for a decent place for that.Anyone have any input please let me know.

What are some good local hangouts to find and meet other US citizens?
Comment #15 Tom (63.176.159.101) - 04/27/09 19:36
Back to Victor's original message... why not start an English Speaking Expat meeting there? Post an announcement online and/or an English language newspaper if there is one in the area.

If you want to spend an incredible amount of money to visit hell, come to Venezuela.90% of Venezuelans are dirty, vulgar, rude, dishonest and out to take advantage of whoever they can, specially a foreigner.
The trash is all over the place and the sewage system exits right on the beaches. If you want to to spend a lot of money to see trash, swim in sewage and get overcharged for everything....come to Venezuela!!!!
I would suggest you go to Costa Rica or Mexico where the cost of living is much cheaper and the locals treat foreigners well.

Pinto, you have not provided any contact information for guys to get back to you. I would suggetst that if you are moving to Venezuela, do not be in such a hurry to meet other expats(unless there is the reisk of culture shock). Just go there, get used to the place and within no time, you will be bumping into them without much struggle.Khalid, are you some sort of a lonely heart?

I'm relocating to VE in the next couple months and am surprised at some of the posts here, particularly #16. Although I'm certainly no expert on the country, I have been there for a total of over five weeks and have found none of what was said in post 16 to be true. To be fair though, it probably depends a great deal on where one is.
Certainly prices are quite a bit less than in the US, but that depends entirely on what currency exchange rate one uses to calculate US $ costs. At the official rate of 2.15 BSF to the dollar, prices are comparable to the US. At a more respectable rate of 5 or 6 to the $, prices are quite low: except for cars.
The people which I've met are anything but rude, anything but dishonest, and are helpful to someone like me who speaks Spanish very poorly. Again, it probably depends on where one goes.
At any rate, I'm relocating to the Rio Chico area, Los Canales specifically, and find the area to be different than what we see in the US, but very nice.
Rio Chico has a great deal of shopping available, and if there's something you need that can't be found there the town of Higuerote ( about 15 miles east ) will have whatever it is.
I certainly would like to hear from other US expats who may already be in VE, or who are planning to do so.

I think Venezuelans are like anybody else, New York has its share of dirty, dishonest, rude people too. But not everybody is that way, at least I don´t think so. Everybody is out to make a buck, or steal one if they can´t make it. Watch out for the sex, drugs and alcohol, those three can set you up for a roller coaster ride easy!

I plan to come to Merida soon. My first priority there is to get some serious dental work done, which I can't afford in the u.s. I would also like to become more familiar with Venezuelan society, and for this purpose will try to find work in Merida, either teaching or doing something related to computers. I really don't care what I make at the job - the purpose of it is to have more meaningful relationships with Venezuelans. I would be glad to hear ideas on any of this.
