Hi all. I'm wondering if there are any bookstores on the island that are geared towards English-speaking people. My wife and I may be interested in opening one up if there's a need for it. We almost had one up and running in Canada several years ago, but she decided to try her hand at selling women's lingerie instead. Now we are retiring in '09 and want to move to Margarita Island for some sun and fun. Any information on this topic would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Why not sell lingerie in Margarita Island? That might be a bigger market... especially if you can figure out how to import Victorias Secret or another brand not common available there!

I think bookstores are kind out dated... since we'll be burning books... not because we are offended by the content... but because we need them for fuel to keep warm.

Now I don't think bookstores are out dated. There are people everywhere who like to read. I personally, don't like to read. But when I go to the Mall, sometimes I stop at Walden's Books. I always find interesting things in there.. Bookstores will never go out dated.. I also think that a lingerie store would be better for the area your talking about..

I agree with Tim, books are outdated, since you can download most ebook contents through the net, you just need the correct keywords and you'll have the latest best sellers and even some of the rarest books. Why not open a computer rental shop instead? Through I don't have any idea what's the market on it at margarita.

Why a computer rental shop? Wouldn't you just rather buyyour own computer than renting one..

I think the lingerie store in Margarita Island is a really good idea. I know a lot of women would enjoy being able to get Victoria's Secret if possible.

I agree with the Victoria's Secret idea. I love that store and I have to have someone from the U.S. order it for me then send it to me.

a book store that was geared towards english would do very very well here, i am sure of it. we have so many friends here that also believe the same and have discussed opening one. but that is one of those ideas that is destined for success here. and the lingerie would also do good if you got some of the brands that are popular in the states, it would be a hit.

Terry, I have to agree with the majority of the posters here, .. by FAR the best idea out of the ideas posted here is the lingerie store...
there are lots of stores here that sell lingerie, BUT, i have yet to see Victoria's Secret..
there is a place called Senza, which is a lingerie store, and the local chain called Sigo, also has in house lingerie stores, BUT none of them sell Victoria's Secret..
Do your research, check if you can become a distributor of V.S.
as far as the book store.. there are some good book stores on the island.. "Nacho's" and "Tecni-Ciencia" which are national chains and have some books in english. There is also an english "book swap" down at the local Marina Concorde.
hope this was insightful,
Regards.

I do not think the idea of a bookstore would ever get outdated. To me, the idea to read an electronic version of a novel would not be interesting. Imagine having your eyes glued to an e-book reader/laptop while catching on the latest fiction sensation. I think the old way still appeals to most people. You do not have to worry about whether there are any established book stores in the island. Simply combine a lingerie shop with a book store. Regards

You indicated that one was almost up and running until your wife decided to try her hand in selling lingerie instead. You have not mentioned how the whole thing transpired like did you finally have to close it down.I think you need to do some appraisal of the situation in the island and make a decision based on what your chances of success might be.
Follow your heart sir...

I have never been to Margarita Island, but oh my goodness, it simply sounds exquisite.

Margarita is very close to where I am from, by the way. This is a reason why I would consider here for vacation rather than somewhere else.

Maybe Mauritius islands is a good choice as well, but I do not even know where this region is, much less the area, in itself.

Mauritius? It kind of sounds like a name. I think I knew someone at one time, with such a name.

Margarita is the most lovely little island, considerably the most lovely place in all of Venezuela.

I have to agree on that. That is why lots of people, most are retirees who loves to go to Margarita. I would also want to be in this place when I retire. But for now I will just be there for vacation purposes. Lots of great food and warm people. I bet that if you go to this place you would plan your next visit. Have a great day people.
