I would try asking some locals, they would have the best knowledge on the lawyers in that area. They know who is the best and who is the worst. If that does not help try going to yahoo yellow pages.

What are immigration lawyers usually hired for? If I wanted to get one to find out what I needed to get to go live in another country about how much would it cost to get an immigration lawyer for maybe a week?

Try going to our local immigration office and ask them regarding your concern. That is the best thing to do.

The best way to get a reputable lawyer is to interact with the locals and they will direct you to probably the best. No one has said you have to get an immigration lawyer in order to relocate at a place but I guess that is the norm. I guess you have through the rigorous process of getting a piece of land registered under your name. Try online searches too

Michael from Ireland, Top of the mornin' to ya.
as for this so called "immigration lawyer" I don't know what you need that for... Is that.. where they want to deport you and your trying to stay here?
if your referring to becoming a resident in the country you need to go to the nearest Venezuelan Consulate in your country, and apply for your first Transeunte Visa.
they will have a series of pre-requisites, Proof of income letter, letter of motives ( why you want to move here) etc etc...
It's really quite simple.
after you have your visa out of the way, then contact SEVERAL lawyers for investments to compare what each one of them tells you and their different prices.
I hope this was insightful.
if you need further assistance, contact me through the contact user link next to my name..
Regards.

UPDATE:Michael, I think I jumped ahead and read 2 messages in the list together,
I noticed you didn't SAY you were looking for an immigration lawyer, but just a "reputable lawyer". Did you find what you were looking for?

A lawyer would help you with the legal aspects of acquiring a piece of property or dealing with your immigration details. You might think that everything else is running smooth until someone points the loopholes that exist in the industry.Requiring a lawyer for your retirement issues might look 'misplaced' but I guess it is the way to go. Besides, Michael did not state why he was looking for one, or did he?

That would help Ross, looking at the directory, why haven't i thought of that? But i think you should check on the net for the best law firm on the place you are located if you are after those who are reputable as you had said.
I think that is the best way to pick up the best reputable lawyer to help you with your legal needs.
Update us here..

Are there any American expat communities in Venezuela which can make me feel in place? I am planning to move there but would want to have a place or a community to belong with.

Does one really require an immigration lawyer? Why would this be the case?
Comment #17 adam (63.176.159.196) - 01/05/10 17:03
Immigration lawyers can help a person to understand certain requirements and what not, pertaining to particular legal instances.

What is the most important factor as far as getting the right lawyer when dealing with immigration service?

I have to agree on that, it is indeed a lawyer who can help you out on the legal matters that you are to be facing. But anyway, you can also try to research yourself. Most of the information are now posted on the net, whether it is legal or not they are all there. You just have to invest on some time to learn more on your own. Ciao..
