| Questions: Of America's Big 4 sports, why basketball is relatively so big global The Big 4 sports I'm referring to are of course the 4 pro team-sports: football, baseball, basketball and hockey (actually I think that soccer has overtaken hockey in the US now but the NHL is still bigger and richer than the MLS). Anyway, American Football is pretty much confined to the US. Outside the US, baseball is only big in East Asia (Japan, Korea, Taiwan, NOT China) and a few Carribean islands and Venezuela, Mexico. Ice-hockey is big in Canada and Eastern Europe. But basketball is pretty big in West and East Europe, the Carribean, South America, Africa, China and Australia. By implication, the NBA has a bigger global fan-base than the NFL, MLB and NHL combined! Pleez explain why this is so! It can't be simply because basketball is cheaper to play and uses smaller facilities, could it? |
